10 CFR 50 APPENDIX B

Code of Federal regulations which defines the minimum quality assurance requirements for US commercial nuclear power plants.

craneglossary3

ABNORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS

Environmental conditions that are unfavorable, harmful or detrimental to or for the operation of a hoist, such as excessively high (over 100 deg. F) or low (below 0 deg. F.) ambient temperatures, corrosive fumes, dust laden or moisture laden atmospheres, and hazardous locations.

ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE

A motor controller designed to convert fixed frequency AC power to available frequency power for AC motor speed control. The system is used in conjunction with a squirrel cage motor to control speed over a relatively wide, constant torque range, by maintaining a constant voltage / frequency ratio. This type of control "leashes" the in-rush current to deliver startup power to the motor as efficiently as possible providing a soft-start feature thereby minimizing load swing.

craneglossary3

ADJUSTABLE OR VARIABLE VOLTAGE

A method of control by which the motor supply voltage can be adjusted.

ALARA

As defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission: "Acronym for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable," means making every reasonable effort to maintain exposures to ionizing radiation as far below the dose limits as practical, consistent with the purpose for which the licensed activity is undertaken, taking into account the state of technology, the economics of improvements in relation to state of technology, the economics of improvements in relation to benefits to the public health and safety, and other societal and socioeconomic considerations, and in relation to utilization of nuclear energy and licensed materials in the public interest."

ANTI COLLISION

An Electrical means of keeping 2 or more crane's from contacting each other.

craneglossary3

ANTI-SKEWING

Capability of the crane design to maintain squareness in relation to the runway structure.

craneglossary3

AUTOMATIC CRANE

A crane system which when activated operates through a preset cycle or cycles, by means of relays or a PLC. Positional indication can be supplied electronically by limit switches, encoders, resolvers or lasers.

craneglossary3

AUXILIARY GIRDER (OUTRIGGER)

A girder arranged parallel to the main girder for supporting the platform, motor base, operator’s cab, control panels, etc., to reduce the torsional forces such load would otherwise impose on the main girder.

craneglossary3

AUXILIARY HOIST

A supplemental hoisting unit, usually designed to handle lighter loads at a higher speed than the main host.
