As defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission: "A heavily shielded container used to store and/or ship radioactive materials. Lead and steel are common materials used in the manufacture of casks."
American Crane's nuclear program dates to the 1980s when we developed automated radwaste handling cranes which are deployed at numerous commercial power plants. This was followed by cranes supplied to the Department of Energy sites, built in accordance with our nuclear quality assurance program. In the mid 1990s American Crane developed a multi-year plan to enter the market for single failure-proof crane applications.
Over 40 Single Failure-Proof Cranes, ranging from 1 to 150 tons, have been built, or are on order. These cranes are at DOE sites, space launch facilities, and commercial power plants. At present the majority of new cask handling cranes have been or are being supplied by American Crane. These designs have passed US NRC review and have been found acceptable. These "lessons learned" have been incorporated into American Crane's latest single failure-proof design ULTRASAF™ (Ultimate Lifting To Resolve Accidental Drop)
Our SAFLIFT™ product automates the transfer of vertical dry cask storage systems and minimizes seismic risk during the dry spent fuel transfer process. American Crane, as the nuclear crane market leader, can provide complete turnkey packages of material handling equipment built in accordance with its 10CFR 50 Appendix B/NQA-1 quality assurance program.
American Crane is capable of supplying reactor, turbine and auxiliary building cranes for the next generation of nuclear power plant.
Single Failure-Proof Cranes can be built in accordance with our 10CFR50 Appendix B Quality Assurance program consistent with the requirements of NUREG 0554, assuring a licensable design.

The handling of spent fuel cask involves the use of Single Failure-Proof Cranes. ULTRASAF is the culmination of American Crane's single failure-proof experience.
U - Ultimate
L - Lifting
T - To
R - Resolve
A - Accidental Drop
Our Single Failure-Proof Crane (ULTRASAF) combines American Crane's experience building over 40 single failure-proof cranes for the Department of Energy, space launch, and commercial utilities into a 21st century NUREG 0554 hoisting system. ULTRASAF technology can be used in both the main and auxiliary hoisting systems. ULTRASAF is designed to eliminate load drop should any of the common hoisting failures occur. ULTRASAF integrates the following systems to produce ...
Our Single Failure Proof Trolley Rental offers an economical alternative to the purchase of a new trolley. This 125 Ton Single Failure Proof NUREG 0554 Compliant Trolley is perfect for cask handling applications used in decommissioning projects as well as other applications.
The trolley features an adjustable trolley gauge to allow it to operate on crane bridges with spans between 14 feet and 17 feet. The trolley is electrically self-contained requiring only a 480 volt 3 phase supply. Operation of the trolley is via radio control to provide operator maximum flexibility.
SAFLIFT® The Safest Way to Handle Spent Fuel Casks & Canisters
The SAFLIFT® cask/canister lift system is designed to safely transport loaded transfer casks and canisters with the SAFLIFT® strongback lower block from the spent fuel pool area to the canister transfer area. which is normally located in a truck or railroad bay. Once the transfer cask and canister have been placed on top of the concrete cask, the SAFLIFT® system provides seismic stability to the stacked casks by supporting the load with the the SAFLIFT® strongback lower block. This eliminates the problems and costs associated with building based tie-down of the stacked casks.
An added benefit is the SAFLIFT® can hold the transfer cask thereby ...
