As defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission: "Radioactive materials at the end of a useful life cycle that should be properly disposed of, including The highly radioactive material resulting from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, including liquid waste directly in reprocessing and any solid material derived from such liquid waste that contains fission products in concentrations; Irradiated reactor fuel; and Other highly radioactive material that the Commission, consistent with existing law, determines by rule require permanent isolation. High-level waste (HLW) is primarily in the form of spent fuel discharged from commercial nuclear power reactors. It also includes HLW from activities and a small quantity of reprocessed commercial HLW"
In the early 80's American Crane supplied its first remotely operated nuclear radwaste handling crane with automated computer control system and custom grapples. This technology has continued to develop.
These early crane system were designed with various grapples to handle drums, drum containers, DAW boxes and high integrity containers. Operation of these cranes was performed from either remote or local locations. The crane system also included redundant features in order to insure maximum crane reliability.
From the early 80's through today American Crane has enjoyed a strong reputation as a specialty supplier in the remote radwaste storage field. This reputation is further enhanced with our 10 CFR 50 ...
American Crane and Equipment offers Nuclear Plant Crane and Hoist upgrades for our Equipment OR Other OEMs.

American Crane's nuclear program dates to the 1980s when we developed automated radwaste handling cranes which are deployed at numerous commercial power plants. This was followed by cranes supplied to the Department of Energy sites, built in accordance with our nuclear quality assurance program. In the mid 1990s American Crane developed a multi-year plan to enter the market for single failure-proof crane applications.
Over 40 Single Failure-Proof Cranes, ranging from 1 to 150 tons, have been built, or are on order. These cranes are at DOE sites, space launch facilities, and commercial power plants. At present the majority of new cask handling cranes have been or are being supplied by American Crane. These designs have passed US NRC review and have been found acceptable. These "lessons learned" have been incorporated into American Crane's latest single failure-proof design ULTRASAF™ (Ultimate Lifting To Resolve Accidental Drop)
Our SAFLIFT™ product automates the transfer of vertical dry cask storage systems and minimizes seismic risk during the dry spent fuel transfer process. American Crane, as the nuclear crane market leader, can provide complete turnkey packages of material handling equipment built in accordance with its 10CFR 50 Appendix B/NQA-1 quality assurance program.
American Crane is capable of supplying reactor, turbine and auxiliary building cranes for the next generation of nuclear power plant.
